Let Your Nails Show Your American Pride!

The 4th of July is tomorrow, which means it’s time for some patriotic nail art!  Wow your friends at tomorrow’s BBQs and pool parties by using these tips.

If you’ve been on Pinterest within the past couple weeks, you’ve most likely seen a plethora of nail designs that scream “I’m proud to be an American!” Regardless of whatever style you choose, we highly recommend utilizing stencils.  Though many of you may be the Picassos of nail design, we’re guessing that the majority of you are like us, who leave our nails looking more like a battle scene than anything resembling the stars and stripes.

Some people like to use regular scotch or masking tape; however, we think the best results are achieved with nail art striping tape.  You can get this very inexpensive tape online at either Amazon.com or eBay, or they also sell it at Urban Outfitters.

The next decision you need to make is which nail polishes you want to use.  We love these three choices for red, white and blue.

O.P.I.’s DS Luxurious: A perfect red. It contains glitter to make your nails really pop.  It also reminds us of 4th of July fireworks!

Sephora by O.P.I.’s White Hot: This white is will provide a stark contrast against the red and blue.

Essie’s Aruba Blue:  We like this deep blue because like DS Luxurious, there is a little shimmer, which emulates the 4th of July fireworks, as well as making your nails stand out.

Now that you’ve got your colors, it’s time to pick a design.  We really like the idea of having four fingers with red and white stripes with one accent nail with the blue (we usually pick the ring finger).  Next, what you want to do is paint your nails with the white color (excluding the accent nail; this will require a couple coats).  Allow to dry completely.  While these nails are drying, paint your accent nail with the blue.  Once your fingers are dry, apply the striping tape to each white fingernail (3 to 5 stripes), then paint these nails with the red.  Allow to dry and the pull off the tape.

If you’re feeling confident in your artistic abilities, add a little something to the accent nail in white.  Our favorite designs are anchors, stars or small polka dots.

Wait for everything to dry COMPLETELY (Important!!!), and then apply a coat or two of Sally Hansen Advanced Hard as Nails Strengthening Topcoat.  Then, you’re finished!  Go out and show them off!

Happy Fourth!
