Chia…It’s More Than a Pet

You may be aware of the chia craze, but let’s dig a little deeper and discover these 4 incredible benefits of these miniature superheroes…

1.  Curb Snacking – Mid-afternoon strikes along with your cravings.  Rather than reaching for that bag of chips, try pouring 2 tablespoons of raw chia seeds into a glass of water.  Wait a few minutes, but drink them before the seeds get hard after absorbing the water.  These fiber-loaded little seeds will keep you feeling full and will also lower your cholesterol and prevent the absorption of fat.

2.  Sleep Sounder – Chia is loaded with tryptophan, which raises levels of melatonin and serotonin that help you sleep deeply and  stably.  So just like after big Thanksgiving dinner, you’ll be sure to sleep soundly after about 2 ounces of chia.

3.  Get Luscious Locks – This one is super yummy and will leave your hair looking lustrous and healthy.  Chia has easily-digestible amino acids that strengthen your hair.  Chia seeds also have antioxidants, vitamins, omega-3 oil, fiber and minerals which all work toward strong and shiny hair.  Try this delicious smoothie to improve your hair.

2 cups unsweetened almond milk

2 tbsp chia seeds

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Powdered or liquid stevia to sweeten

Stir chia seeds into almond milk in a glass. Let sit for 15 minutes to allow the chia seeds to absorb some of the liquid and begin to create a gel. Stir in the rest of the ingredients, making it sweet to suit your taste.

4. Beautiful, Glowing Skin – Exfoliate your skin with this DIY chia seed exfoliating scrub.  Here’s how to make it.

1/2 cup coconut oil

1 tbsp lemon juice

2 tbsp chia seeds

Mix the ingredients together before applying to a damp face. Allow the mixture to set for two minutes before using a wet washcloth to remove. Splash cold water on your face when you’ve finished.
